Indigenous Plants and Native Uses in the Northeast Look at the plants growing around you: As you continue up the shady wooded trail into dryer areas, look for black birch (Betula species) and more sugar maple (Acer saccharum) trees. Closer to the ground, look for the white berries or flowers of indian cucumber (Medeola virginica), the bright red partridge berries (Mitchela repens), and European introduced plantain (Plantago species) leaves sprouting from between rocks in the trail.
